Oh, this is such a good question. And I think the answer depends on the show sometimes. Also, I think hype can have a lot to do with it. Someone starts hardcore pushing a fandom and their friends get into it etc. etc. That's how I ended up watching Once Upon a Time (albeit, very late). It seemed like EVERYONE was talking about it.
