Oh wow...I got redirected here from the Fem-Slash comm, from your post....
Scratch that! I'm still ON Fem-Thoughts. Shame on me--I thought I got redirected! ><
Just, wow. First of all, I'm very happy to meet someone like you, because I feel like I've constantly run into people recently (a number of them girls, too) who have been all-too-happy to tell me what a great thing rape is. One girl seriously even said that girls are usually asking for it and end up enjoying it, enough so that if she herself was a boy, she'd consider raping a girl too. Needless to say, I am no longer friends with that psycho.
I'm currently living in Tokyo. I've lived here for almost two years and love Japan with all my heart. It's undoubtedly my home, and I hope it will be my home for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, there is a very dark aspect of Japan that I cannot overcome, however much I love it. And that is the rape culture. I don't know how much you know about Japan and the rape culture, but it's too much for me to go into. Know only that it plays into a great deal of the media here. Sexism is a big problem in Japan as it is, and I'm not quite good at handling that either, but the rape culture itself is the worst to me. I always feel like crying when I come across this kind of thing here, not only because it feels like it should be SO obviously wrong, but because it's everywhere and become so commonplace. I really can't stand that. It's my constant battle living in Japan.... :(
I agree so much with you about it being used to show how horrifying it is and the truth of it, and nothing more. Especially not as a joke... :(
