Comment Meta

Femslash Mini Meta fest was an utter fail this year. And I'm still not in a place where I could do it, so I purpose Comment Meta. And let's have it cover all things female and fannish. However you define those.

How it works

1. Post a meta topic in a top level comment. Use the subject line for the meta subject and expand as you want in the body of the comment. Or don't.

2. Repeat Step 1 for as many meta ideas as you have.

3. Comment on other meta topics.

It's kinda like a kink meme, only with meta. Feel free to browse the mini meta tag for ideas.

This is meant to be about as low pressure as it comes. Feel free to write on your own journal/Tumblr/blog and link back here. Respond with as little or as much as you want. This post will remain open indefinitely, so please track it if that makes things easier for you.

When I first got into fandom *mumblemumble* years ago, but back in the bad old days of dial-up. it did seem like there were more distinct categories and labels. I think this is partly my view as an outsider who didn't really have my own niche or circle of friends, but back then it did look to me like you had a fannish identity and sought out people who shared that identity. Maybe it was a side effect of slash being considered the ginger cousin twice removed, and femslash being basically non-existant.

Now I consider fandom to be more a series of interlocking circles. Like, I'd probably be in the centre of a circle labelled "likes female characters" and my primary interests are in femslash, het, and female character centric gen, and so I seek out other fans who like those things. But of course the fan I befriended out of a mutual interest in femslash might also write and rec boyslash, the writer whose gen fic I love might also be an enthusiastic participant in kink_bingo, and I'm more likely to stick my toe into those parts of fandom because I already know people there.

I dunno, I like this model of doing fandom better.

I really like how you describe fandom as a series of interlocking circles. I've been trying to think of how I would describe where I fit into fandom and how I think of fandom...but you definitely did it for me here!
