Seriously, up to that episode, there is absolutely nothing about Emily or her background that suggests Catholic. Nothing. I was so frustrated by that because it felt like a cheap shortcut, a "people won't really believe that she's upset about all of this if we don't make her what the public conceives of as the ultimate ur-religion" thing, rather than actually trying to think about her previous characterization at all. Also, it seems completely ahistorical.
