There seems to be slight confusion about this and I guess I didn't make it very clear. The discussion prompts (posted on Mondays) are taken from the mini meta fests prompt lists. The Monday discussion prompt is then picked pretty much at random.

Full prompt list )

This is mainly so I don't have to come up with a discussion prompt all on my lonesome. If you have a prompt feel free to leave a comment. They don't need to be femslash, just female friendly.

Edit: Remember this is a prompt post only! If you see something you desperately want to respond to you have two options. Option 1 (and my favorite): Make a new post to the community and lay out your thoughts. Option 2: Wait for me to use it as a discussion topic. Option 1 is clearly the better one, but you can wait if you want.

I'm going to attempt to post these on a regular basis. Either weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly based on how much activity there is. Discussion prompts will be taken randomly from the mini-meta prompt posts.

Genderswapping AUs, etc. Genderswapping has a reputation of being a way to "avoid the gay" in male-dominated fandoms, by switching one character's gender to allow for a romance. Is there good lesbian genderswap out there?

I posted a mini-meta on femslash set in difficult times and places that includes four suggestions, some examples (from books, films, and my own stories), and a bonus quote on the topic from Sarah Waters. It's on my DW.

I wanted to try one of these.  So, here it goes.

Why not just read and talk here? )

Also, on a related note though not specifically femslash, I have a short rant of sorts about Kink as a catch all phrase at my journal-

I welcome thoughts.

In response to a prompt from last year: Crossover femslash--why do you write/read it or not write/read it? What about the characters, shows, etc. makes you pair up women from different canons? How is it different, or not, from non-crossover fic? -- I wrote a mini-meta on how I approached one of my crossover couples at my journal.

In response to the prompt "What's your approach to writing femslash in times and places that are notoriously unfriendly for f/f relationships, especially historical settings?"

The very first femslash fic I ever wrote (and also my first fanfic at all) is about Mary Bennet and Anne de Bourgh from Pride and Prejudice. One of my motivations was annoyance at the fact that pretty much all the femslash fic I've read set in historical fandoms is full of bittersweet angst, or experimentation before marriage. There's nothing wrong with these sorts of stories, but I yearned for "and then they lived together happily forever and ever".

Of course once I started trying to write such a happy ending I realised why they're so rare.

This is a prompt post! Please only leave prompts here. If you see something you want to respond to make a new post to the community.

For those who don't know: Mini meta is like regular meta, only mini. The aim isn't to end up with thousands of words of meta, but somewhere around 300 words. (Although if you get inspired and write thousands of words no one will complain and similarly if you only have 100 words in you for the topic that is fine as well.) This, hopefully, creates much less pressure and allows more people to post what is on their minds without worrying about it being the most perfect thing ever.

Rules will be the same as last year.

  1. Submit topics you want to see meta about. These can be anything so long as it relates to femslash. They will be listed at the bottom of this post for everyone to see.

    Sample prompts from last year:

    • OT3s: Are there any awesome OT3s out there? Are any of them all from the same canon? Can you still call is femslash if one of the three is a man?
    • Femmeslash and asexuality - tell me about how you see this. What would femmeslash with one or more asexual partner look like? How would you write it?
    • No pithy prompt, but I'd love to see a discussion of sexuality-how we conceptualize it for characters, write it in, leave it out...fluid or fixed. Is it too often assumed in femslash that the characters are lesbians, closet lesbians and not bi, poly, etc.?

  2. Write meta about the topics. Don't worry if someone else has already written about a topic you wanted to write about, multiple posts about the same topic are encouraged. You can even write mini meta in response to someone else's meta.

You can post directly to [community profile] fem_thoughts or you can post to your journal and link us.

  3. Discuss the meta!

  4. Show off your meta and get other people to come discuss it! Or possibly do this step first and tell people about the fest. Whichever works really.

Submit your prompts to this post and I'll add them to the list. Feel free to re-use from previous years. There's no limit on the number of prompts you can submit.

I lost track of time and I'm posting this a bit late so go ahead and start posting whenever you find something you want to write about. Let's call the end date of the fest May 31st so you've got a bit over a month.

PROMPT POST ONLY! IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO RESPOND TO PLEASE MAKE A NEW POST TO THE COMMUNITY!

Prompt List

  • Butch identified/fan-assigned butch identity - what does it mean for characters, a story?
  • I'd love to see asexual lesbians in fandom revisited. Most fandom asexuals I can think of are male.
  • What about genderqueer lesbians? Do any fandoms even have this?
  • Genderswapping AUs, etc. Genderswapping has a reputation of being a way to "avoid the gay" in male-dominated fandoms, by switching one character's gender to allow for a romance. Is there good lesbian genderswap out there?
  • Lovers in a dangerous time: What's your approach to writing femslash in times and places that are notoriously unfriendly for f/f relationships, especially historical settings?
  • How popular (or influential) is RPFS, anyway? And particularly, amongst female artists (in the male slash example I used, the case would be amongst authors, or even editors, publishers, etc.) Also, I'm more interested and curious about the RPFS of female public figures pre-20th century. But really, any time period will do.
  • femslash and intersectionality - race, class, ethnicity, disability etc.
  • femslash and kink
  • femslash involving older characters
  • I'd love to read about experiences with femslash podfic as a reader and/or a listener.
  • I would love to hear your thoughts on the revisited topic of actively bisexual female characters or F/F/M threesomes in erotic fiction. I guess mostly from a reader's point of view. The story has femslash but it also has het... does it work for you? Or for the sake of reading comfortably as femslash and thus being called femslash some walls should be maintained?
  • Have you ever chosen a fandom for it's femslash potential? Which fandoms / pairings?

The Meta Month of March is a month-long meta fest for all kinds of meta - general discussion about fandom, writing, vidding, etc. as well as fandom-specific meta. We're looking forward to a (hopefully) great variety of meta topics and a lot of discussion, and we'd love some contributious that focused on female characters! :)

In the second half of February, you can sign up with a topic you want to write about, and a day in March when you'd like to post it. (There's a post for requesting and suggesting meta topics if you need inspiration!) You can find the full rules here.

The fest is run through [community profile] month_of_meta and [livejournal.com profile] month_of_meta.

Sign-ups are open now on LJ and on DW.

Let's talk about tropes. Both for femslash and women in general.

What are your favorite tropes? Which tropes should die in a fire? What do you desperately wish with all your heart would become a trope?

So, apparently this community has 211 members with 308 subscribers and I bet you barely know each other. I know that I barely know you. So we are having an introduction/party/hang out post of greatness!

What do you do here? Introduce yourself in a comment, reply to other peoples comments, talk about that bizarre idea you've had and didn't think anyone else would be interested in, throw out some ideas you think this comm could have fun with, basically have fun and get to know each other. There's no wrong way to do this. Except .gif spamming in a top level comment because there are still people out there on dial up.

I'll go first in the comments.

Disclaimer: I 'm only speaking from my experience and am not way authoritative. I have never been in a fandom dominated by femslash. This may  affect my perspective.

Some fannish background

I am a fan in Marvel comics fandom, which 's weird in that while the X-Men part of it is big, the rest of it doesn't receive a lot of love. In fact, the current subset I'm in doesn't even exist until 2006. It's still small enough to qualify for Yuletide. The canon is complex, convoluted, with loads and loads of characters and over fifty years of history. It's pretty much like a maze and you need a guide to get into it. If you're new to it, you may not know what to begin. There're quite a amount of female characters, and there's enough canon to suppot certain pairings. But you have to first know they exist, not to mention how to find them.

This doesn't help you to find, not to say to build a pairing. In fact, my google-fu only managed to find 3 short femslash fics in my subset when I set out for it. The date stamp for femslash in Marvel in AO3, though may not be very representative, proves my perception. They only come into existence in two years.

Now the percentage of Marvel femslash on AO3 is still not high, a total of 33 out of 416. The percentage is similar to that in DCU and Homestruck and higher than the average 1000 stories updated in a month in AO3. It's higher than Harry Potter fandom and SGA, both the biggest  fandom  on AO3. A decent percentage, considering that there are femslash fanwork uncollected in kink meme and else where on LJ/DW.

How does it grow from practically zero to a newcomer like me to now? Well, it seems like boasting, but I contribute to it by writing 7 of them and inspires a remix of mine.  And I get into the joy of multi-shipping of femslash through the help of fans.

Firstly, my subset like many others is slash dominated, (in fact it starts from a slash epic), but the main hub of it 's very female-character friendly. (There were once a mod-initiated appreciation of canon love interest post ) Bashing of female characters as I know is not allowed on the main com. Several of the high profile fans write femslash as a background pairing. There's at least a femslash friendly area.

Secondly, the fans post about them. I get into Misty Knight/Colleen Wing (Badass POC female characters kick ass and be awesome together! Decades of friendship in canon! Meaningful glances and hugging and crying! One free from mind control due to sheer love of another!) through picspam and squee post of a fan. When I got curious and asked her about it, she  was very nice and guided me toward the way to get canon. I was totally convinced then. When I started to write, she betaed for me. I don't think I'll be a fan of the pairing without her.

When I start to write and post, I crosspost to wherever appropriate and hope for the best. I post in AO3 and tag like hell. I join the panfandom exchange and kink meme to prompt for femslash. I offer myself to write femslash pairing. I regularly leave prompts for femslash on comment fic com. I try my best to leave kudos and comment on the related fanwork.

My experience concluded:

1. Post, and people will follow. Writing fic is one of the means. But squee post, review ship manifesto, meta, recommendation, linkspam  are all good. Post to the bigger platform and attract people.

2.  Use every chance to increase you ship's visibility. Comment fic community, kink meme, panfandom exchange, everything. Prompt everywhere you can. To let people know that someone wants it. It can make a difference.

3. Connect to other fans. In comics fandom, there's a saying that there's never only you. I believe that it applies to all other fandoms. It's easier in a small fandom where everyone pretty much know everyone. But sometimes take the initiative and it may surprise you.

4. Try to maintain a femslash friendly environment everywhere you post.

5. Have fun, and don't give up!

It's my experience of shipping a rare pairing  in a small fandom. I would like to know yours.

Not a mini meta per se (except it's sort of short), more a list of what I've learned from fandom. There are probably gonna be more parts. Feel free to comment with your own thoughts on things you've learnt.
